Michigan State had three players selected in the 2023 NFL Draft: wide receiver Jayden Reed (Green Bay Packers), punter Bryce Baringer (New England Patriots) and cornerback Ameer Speed (New England Patriots).

Following the conclusion of the draft, several other Spartans who are NFL hopefuls agreed to terms as undrafted free agents (UDFAs) with various teams in the league.

Ben VanSumeren, linebacker

VanSumeren posted on his Instagram account that he intends to sign an undrafted free agent deal with the Philadelphia Eagles.

He put up monster numbers at Michigan State's pro day and was one of the most athletic players to wear the Green and White recently.

He recorded a 4.40-second 40-yard dash, 42.5-inch vertical jump, 10-foot-11-inch broad jump and 29 reps on the bench press (225 pounds).

Following the pro day performance, there was talk VanSumeren could be a late-round draft pick, but it was not to be.

VanSumeren transferred to Michigan State from Michigan ahead of the 2021 season.

In 2022, he played in 11 games with starts. VanSumeren recorded 81 tackles, three tackles for loss, two sacks and two pass break-ups.

In 24 games as a Spartan, VanSumeren had 93 total tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks and two passes defended.

Jacob Slade, defensive tackle

Slade is reportedly signing a UDFA deal with the Arizona Cardinals, which includes $200,000 in guaranteed money, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

In five seasons in East Lansing, Slade played in 42 games with 26 starts. He amassed 88 total tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, four passes defended, a fumble recovery and a blocked kick throughout his career.

Slade was a third-team All-Big Ten selection by the media in 2021. He earned honorable mention accolades by both the coaches and media in 2022 despite playing in only eight games due to injury last season.

Slade was also selected in the USFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Maulers, but is looking to stay in the NFL for now.

Xavier Henderson, safety

Team leader (two-time season-long captain) and five-year player Xavier Henderson is heading to the Washington Commanders, per Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston.

Henderson was forced to miss five games in 2022 after suffering a season injury versus Western Michigan.

He finished his strong career as a Spartan with 271 total tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, three interceptions, 12 passes defended, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He played in 53 games with 40 starts.

Henderson was a third-team All-Big Ten selection by the media in 2021, and earned an honorable mention nod in 2022 despite only playing in seven games.

Kendell Brooks, safety

Wilson also reported that Michigan State safety Kendell Brooks is heading to the Arizona Cardinals, where he will join Slade.

Brooks joined Michigan State ahead of the 2021 season after previously playing for North Greenville, a Division II program in South Carolina.

Brooks played primarily on special teams in his first season as a Spartan, but appeared in all 13 games.

Due to the injury to Henderson, Brooks was forced into the starting lineup in 2022 and more than held his own, posting 100 total tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, three passes defended and three forced fumbles in 11 games (10 starts).

Jarrett Horst, offensive tackle

While Horst was the No. 1 overall pick in the USFL Draft by the Michigan Panthers, he will first try to earn a spot in the NFL. Simon Clancy reports that Horst has agreed to a UDFA deal with the Miami Dolphins.

Horst joined MSU ahead of the 2021 season after starting his career at Ellsworth Community College and then Arkansas State.

He earned earned honorable mention All-Big Ten accolades by both the coaches and media in 2021. Horst played in 16 games at Michigan State, including 15 starts.

Rookie minicamp invites

Update, May 2: Michigan State cornerback Ronald Williams II has been invited to rookie minicamp with the San Francisco 49ers.

Williams transferred to Michigan State from Alabama ahead of the 2021 season. He played in 23 games for the Spartans, making 10 starts. Williams recorded 58 total tackles, two tackles for loss, one interception, nine pass break-ups, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Update, May 4: In addition to the Williams news, the Michigan State Football Twitter announced that offensive guard Matt Carrick has earned a rookie minicamp invite with the Green Bay Packers. Carrick will reunite with Reed for the minicamp in Green Bay.

Carrick won five letters while at Michigan State. He played in 47 career games with 27 starts at right guard.

Additionally, tight end Daniel Barker, running back Jarek Broussard, offensive guard Brian Greene and tight end Tyler Hunt could also be looking to sign UDFA deals or get rookie minicamp camp invites. Some could also opt not to pursue a professional football career.
