Michigan State defensive line coach Marco Coleman is leaving MSU and returning to coach at Georgia Tech under newly-hired head coach Brent Key. The news was first reported by Rivals site Jacketsonline.com.

Spartans Illustrated has confirmed that Coleman has called the parents of incoming MSU signees to let them know the news. We have also reached out to Michigan State for confirmation and/or comment.

The reporting on this is from Jacketsonline.com publisher Kelly Quinlan, who has indicated to us that Coleman informed Mel Tucker today. According to Quinlan, Coleman has signed his contract with Georgia Tech already.

The reason he left Georgia Tech last year was because he did not want to work with former head coach Geoff Collins. Coleman is good friends with many of the current GT staff members, including Travares Tillman, who recently left Michigan State for Georgia Tech. Unfortunately for Michigan State, it just makes sense that the Hall of Fame player wanted to return to his alma mater.

Coleman came to Michigan State in 2022 after coaching at Georgia Tech for three seasons from 2019 through 2021. He was a a coaching fellow with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017 and worked as an assistant defensive line coach for the (then) Oakland Raiders in 2018.

Coleman also played for Georgia Tech as an outside linebacker from 1989-1991 before going on to play 14 seasons in the NFL. Coleman is a member of the Yellow Jackets Athletics Hall of Fame and helped Georgia Tech win a share of the 1990 national championship.

If Coleman is leaving East Lansing, that would create a huge hole to fill on head coach Mel Tucker's staff. Several of the 2023 signees along the defensive line built a strong bond with Coleman, including Andrew Depaepe, Bai Jobe and Jalen Thompson.
