Michigan State continues to add to its 2023 roster and the latest addition is kicker Tarik Ahmetbasic from Chippewa Valley High School in Clinton Township, Michigan. Ahmetbasic is joining the Spartans as a preferred walk-on.
Ahmetbasic announced his commitment to the Spartans on Wednesday morning.
"It feels great to finally become a Spartan because it was always my favorite college football team to watch growing up, even though we were focused more on soccer (when I was) a kid," Ahmetbasic told Spartans Illustrated after he announced his commitment.
Ahmetbasic is rated as a four-and-a-half-star kicker by Kohl's Kicking. Additionally, Ahmetbasic didn't miss a single kick for Chippewa Valley as a senior, making all nine of his field goal attempts and drilling all 43 of his extra point attempts. He also handled punting duties.
The Spartans offered Ahmetbasic a preferred walk-on spot on Dec. 16, 2022.
Ahmetbasic was previously committed to Grand Valley State, but announced his decommitment from the Lakers on Jan. 24.
While Ahmetbasic last took an unofficial visit to Michigan State's campus in the spring of 2022, he kept in contact with special teams coordinator Ross Els and the Michigan State coaching staff. It was ultimately the staff and how at home he felt at MSU that led the talented kicker to the Spartans.
"The thing that blew me away (about MSU) was how much the coaches treat you like family, which now I have become part of the Spartan family," Ahmetbasic said. "It was overall just a great experience this whole time working with them."
Ahmetbasic joins kickers Ben Patton, Stephen Rusnak and recently-added North Carolina transfer Jonathan Kim on the roster. He will look to compete for playing time.
Michigan State has added several preferred walk-ons recently, including Ahmetbasic, offensive lineman Cooper Terpstra, tight end/defensive lineman Jaxson Wilson and wide receiver Jack Yanachik.
