Michigan State is adding another transfer, this time on special teams. Ohio State transfer punter Michael O’Shaughnessy announced his commitment to MSU on Wednesday night.
MSU head coach Mel Tucker and special teams coordinator Ross Els are adding some competition to the punting room following the departure of Bryce Baringer.
O’Shaughnessy visited Michigan State in late January and reported an offer from the Spartans on Jan. 29.
The former Buckeye has only attempted one punt during his career at Ohio State, according to Sports Reference, a 41-yarder against Rutgers during the 2022 season.
O’Shaughnessy joins Ryan Eckley, who is the only returning punter from Michigan State's 2022 roster. Eckley walked on to MSU last season and appeared in one game to preserve his redshirt. He had one punt for 41 yards against Akron.
As mentioned, Michigan State is losing Baringer to the NFL Draft in 2023. Baringer was a consensus first-team All-American and the Big Ten Punter of the Year last season. Eckley and O’Shaughnessy will likely battle it out for starting punter duties in the fall.
In 2020, O’Shaughnessy was an OSU Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-Big Ten selection, according to his bio on ohiostatebuckeyes.com.
O’Shaughnessy will have up to two years of eligibility remaining.
In addition to O’Shaughnessy, Michigan State has already bolstered its special teams through the transfer portal by signing North Carolina kicker Jonathan Kim and Ohio State long snapper Mason Arnold.
O’Shaughnessy makes 14 transfer additions for Michigan State. To keep up with all of MSU's transfer portal activity, check here.
