Michigan State redshirt junior defensive lineman Simeon Barrow Jr is considering entering the transfer portal, interim head coach Harlon Barnett told the media on Monday afternoon. While Barrow Jr is still with the program for the time being, Barnett says that he is not expected to travel with the program to Minnesota this weekend.
Barrow Jr. played in all seven games for the Spartans so far this season, including making six starts. In those seven games, Barrow has totaled 19 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.
For his career, Barrow has played in 29 games, totaling 93 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks. He also has one career pass deflection, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
The Grovetown, Georgia native was a three-star prospect in the 2020 recruiting cycle, picking the Spartans over nearly 20 other scholarship offers. Barrows took an official visit to East Lansing in June 2019 before committing to the program two months later in August. West Virginia would make a late push for the Georgia product, hosting him for an official visit in December of that year, but the Spartans were able to hold onto his commitment.
As a true freshman, Barrow would redshirt, and then played in 10 games in 2021 as a redshirt freshman. As a redshirt freshman, he recorded 34 tackles, including four tackles for a loss and three sacks. In 2022, he would earn All-Big Ten honorable mentions from both the Big Ten coaches and media after recording 40 tackles, nine tackles for a loss and four sacks.
This season, Barrow started his season strong with 2.5 tackles for a loss and 1.5 sacks through the Spartans' first four games, but has failed to record a tackle for a loss or sack in each of the last four games.
In additional news, Barnett also mentioned that he expects redshirt junior running back Jalen Berger to miss the rest of the season with an injury. Berger had 25 carries for 97 yards and a touchdown this season.
Berger, who transferred from Wisconsin in 2022, has played in 17 career games for the Spartans. While at MSU, he has recorded 173 carries for 776 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns. He's also made 24 receptions for 168 receiving yards.
Update: Simeon Barrow Jr. officially entered the transfer portal on Oct. 24, 2023.
Latest Update: Spartans Illustrated has confirmed that Barrow has withdrawn his name from the transfer portal on Oct. 26, and is back with the team.
