Two-sport star on Spartan radar

One of the top two-sport athletes in the Midwest for the class of 2019 is Michael Fletcher of Carman-Ainsworth High School in Flint, Michigan. The 6-foot-6, 235-pound prospect already has multiple scholarships and is primed to receive many more. SpartanMag.com was able to catch-up with Fletcher and get the latest details on his recruitment.

Fletcher excels on both the football field and basketball court. As a football prospect he already has offers from Iowa State, Toledo, Central Michigan and Bowling Green. As a basketball prospect Northern Illinois and Toledo have extended him a scholarship. His combination of offers puts him in rare company, especially this early in his recruitment. Fletcher talked about the teams that he has visited most recently

“I have been to two games so far, Michigan and Michigan State. Several other schools have said they said they want my contact info and have expressed interest in me. I like both schools (UM and MSU) and I have family that went to both. But State is my favorite, I grew up cheering for them."

Fletcher has been very productive for Carman–Ainsworth High School since he started playing on the varsity. Last year he racked up 7.5 sacks as just sophomore. His goals is to break the school record of 14 before he graduates. However, the most important aspect is doing whatever it takes to help his team win.

The Cavaliers are currently 1-2 this fall, but they have played two of their tougher opponents, Davidson and Grand Blanc. They lost a heartbreaker in week one by a score of 51-46 to Grand Blanc. This week they take on Flint Powers Catholic in a game which has early season playoff implications for both teams.

Head Coach Mark Dantonio appreciates prospects that can excel in more than one sport. He has been supportive of players participating in more than one if they have the ability and so choose. Class of 2018 commitment Davion Williams will be one of the top basketball players in Michigan this winter and has been told by Tom Izzo he will have an opportunity to join the basketball team once football season wraps up.

Fletcher does not have a scholarship offer from Michigan State at this point, but the staff will be evaluating his junior film. I asked Fletcher about his contact with the staff and what are his strengths as a player.

“I have talked with Coach Snyder, Coach Burton and Coach Dantonio. They have said they are going to keep an eye on me. My strengths are my I.Q, work ethic and my desire to win.”

The in-state class of 2019 is already looking to be one of the stronger in recent years. Rivals.com already has almost twice as many 4-star recruits from Michigan in the class of 2019 than 2018. I fully expect Fletcher to be one the recruits that climbs the rankings once more people see his talent and recognize his potential.

SpartanMag.com will be sure to follow the recruitment if Fletcher over the coming months. I fully expect him to be invited back up to East Lansing again this fall so he can develop additional rapport with the Michigan State coaches and other Spartan players and recruits.
