Awaiting His Shot

EAST LANSING - Former Michigan State All-Big Ten center Brian Allen is going to treat this year’s NFL Draft much like he treated his preparation before taking the football field as a member of the Spartans’ football team from 2014-17.

Which means there won’t be any pomp and circumstance at his parent’s home in Oak Brook, Ill. No TV cameras, no catered spreads of food and not a house filled wall-to-wall with well-wishers and a host of family friends and relatives.

“I’m just going to be at home with my family. Nothing special,’’ said Allen, who played in 51 games for MSU, while starting 38 and serving as one of the team’s captains last season. “It will definitely be a family reunion this weekend. I’m just expecting seven people at my house, five family members and my agent (Shannon Polk). I mean, we’ll see, there may be a couple of friends but that we’ll be it.’’

His agent is a member of IHC Sports, which has a client list that has catered to some very recognizable and significant offensive linemen, including Taylor Decker of the Detroit Lions, Pat Elflein of the Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers Pro Bowl left tackle David Bakhtiari and former Patriots tackle Nate Solder, a two-time Super Bowl champion, who recently became the highest paid offensive lineman in NFL history after signing with the New York Giants.

Despite the hype that surrounds the annual three-day event, it will be business as usual for the 6-foot-2, 302-pound Allen, who had been rated by NFLDraftScout.com as the No. 9 center available in this year’s draft and who was projected to go in the seventh round or sign as a free agent right after showcases at the NFL Combine and MSU’s Pro Day. His stock has since risen to No. 7 at his position, according to that web site.

Since the Combine and Michigan State Pro Day, Allen, spent three weeks to further hone his skills at LaCharles Bentley’s O-Line Performance camp.

The NFL Draft will begin at 8 p.m. on Thursday, with the first round, and run through Sunday.

“I’m not really nervous about it but I’m not overthinking it either,’’ he said. “I know after Saturday that I will have an opportunity with a team, and whoever that is and however I get there, it is what it is. I’m just excited to get a chance to play football at that level and prove myself at that level again.

“So I’m kind of treating it all like I did before wrestling matches (in high school). I knew something important was happening but at the same time, I never got nervous for those, whether it was a state championship or an exhibition match because in the end, it was all just about wrestling. So this is kind of the same thing. It’s another thing I’ve got to do to get where I want to be.’’

PATRIOTS, RAMS HOST ALLEN FOR INTERVIEWS

Allen has had recent interviews with the Los Angeles Rams, with which he spent two days. Also, he had a workout with the New England Patriots’ offensive line coach. Allen has received interest from a number of other NFL teams.

“It went well just getting the feedback from coaches and I’ve been in touch with a couple of teams the past couple of weeks,’’ he said. “It’s definitely picked up a lot more over the past couple of weeks. At least seven or eight teams have told them (IHC Sports) or me that they plan on drafting me but at the same time, that’s been the case for a lot of guys who don’t end up being drafted. There’s probably 10 teams or so that have been in contact pretty consistently, and continue to say they like me and want me to play for their teams. So, we’ll see.’’

Allen is one of four former Big Ten centers ranked among the top 7 by NFLDraftScout.com.

Allen was not surprised by the fact that four centers from the conference dominated NFLDraftScout.com’s rankings of his position.

“I think that playing in the Big Ten has been one thing (that has elevated my stock),’’ Allen said. “I think it’s the toughest conference in the country and the competition you see week in and week out, you see a lot of guys in the NFL that come from that conference. So it gives you confidence knowing that there are a lot of guys that have been in the same place as you and are playing at that level. It’s that and Michigan State, in general; a place where you can continue growing and where you never had a problem getting better there. I definitely grew as a person and player there and I think that kind of mentally put me in a position to be successful.’’

Thursday’s opening round begins at 8 p.m., while rounds 2-3 are scheduled to start at 7 p.m. on Friday. Rounds 4-7, start at noon on Saturday. If projections are correct, Allen will hear his name called sometime in the late afternoon or early evening on the last day, which would make him the second Allen in the family to get a shot in the NFL.

His older brother Jack, who played for MSU from 2011-15, has been a member of the New Orleans Saints roster for the past two seasons. Jack made it as an undrafted free agent.

Brian is looking for the same opportunity his older brother had two years ago, whether it be via the draft or free agency.

Brian Allen is considered MSU’s best chance, maybe only chance, to continue the streak of having a player taken in the NFL Draft every year since 1941. Only USC and Michigan have longer streaks. USC, Michigan, Florida, Nebraska and MSU are the only schools to have a player selected every year since the NFL/AFL merger in 1967.

Even if his name is not called, Allen feels he has done enough to earn an opportunity to be invited to some team’s camp with a chance to make the roster.

“I have no preference. Being drafted would obviously be nice but even if it doesn’t happen, I’ll be ready to play football, regardless,’’ he said. “This has kind of always been my goal since I was a little kid. I’ve always had goals and I’ve always scratched them off. Now, it’s kind of to the point where it’s pretty tangible, it’s close and I have all of the confidence that I can do this now. That’s been the plan from the beginning and now that it’s here, I’m excited to have the opportunity to finally do it.’’
