Michigan State head football coach Jonathan Smith, defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Joe Rossi and company continue their hot streak on the recruiting trail, securing the commitment of preferred walk-on linebacker Carter Enyard.

The St. Louis, Missouri linebacker was previously committed to Kent State, but walked away from the scholarship there to join the Spartans instead.

He announced his decommitment from the Golden Flashes on social media just before pledging to the Spartans on Tuesday.

“I’ve followed Coach Smith for a long time," Enyard told Spartans Illustrated. "I have always been fond of programs and coaches who invest in their guys and develop them to get maximum returns. The more I learned about Coach Smith and Coach Rossi, the more I thought their principles and philosophies aligned with mine. I had other opportunities, but this is a perfect fit for me."

Enyard took a visit to Michigan State this past weekend, but was already familiar with some of the coaches from when they recruited him back at Oregon State.

"After spending time on campus, meeting with coaches, and exploring East Lansing, it is the right place for me," Enyard said. "I think I’ll come in and be a student of the game, learn from coaches and upperclassmen, and I will push myself every day to be better and to make contributions to the team and program on and off the field.”

In addition to Kent State, Enyard had scholarship offers from UNLV, Bucknell and Western Carolina and Northwest Missouri State.

Rivals lists Enyard as a 6-foot-3, 220-pound two-star outside linebacker. He currently attends Mary Institute and Saint Louis Country Day School.

As a senior in 2023. Enyard earned Class 5A All-State, All-District and All-Conference honors.

With national signing day less than 24 hours away, Michigan State currently has 14 scholarship commits in its 2024 high school recruiting class. That number is expected to grow by the time Wednesday closes, and into February as well.

Michigan State's 2024 class currently ranks 65th in the country, but is expected to make a significant climb soon.
