Michigan State already has a pair of three-star offensive line commitments from outside the region for the 2022 class. But Spartan football is hoping to break the in-state ice with a pledge from a highly-recruited prospect on Friday.
Tyrell Henry, a 5.6 three-star wide receiver prospect from Roseville (Mich.) High School, is planning to make a college decision on Friday.
The 6-foot, 170-pound Henry has offers from Michigan State, Penn State, Michigan, Nebraska, West Virginia, Kentucky, Arkansas, Pittsburgh, Syracuse and more.
Michigan State has been regarded as the leader in recent days and weeks. But the battle has continued.
“Michigan State, Nebraska and West Virginia,” Henry said, when asked which schools have recruited him the hardest down the stretch.
Michigan and Penn State had already offered Henry a scholarship by the time Michigan State offered on April 4, just a few weeks after Mel Tucker was hired.
Those schools offered him based on terrific sophomore film in which he demonstrated excellent burst as a wide receiver, ability to high-point the ball in acrobatic fashion as a receiver or defensive back, and terrific deep ball judgement.
Henry followed up with an excellent year of junior film in 2020, which intensified MSU’s pursuit of him, and attracted other schools.
Penn State, which had terrific success recruiting the state of Michigan last year, was among the first to offer, and continued to chase him.
“Penn State has remained in contact,” Henry said. “A lot.
“(Assistant coach) Tim Banks always said how agile I was and how I can play whatever is asked and just my durability, speed and athleticism.”
“Michigan did (remain in contact) but I think they were leaning more towards safety.”
Henry prefers wide receiver.
Michigan State offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic extended the Michigan State offer to Henry.
“Coach Kap offered me over a phone call and Coach Tucker let me know soon as I got offered how wanted I was,” Henry said.
Michigan State wide receivers coach Courtney Hawkins has led the recruitment since then.
“I talk to Coach Hawkins all the time,” Henry said.
If Henry picks Michigan State, he will join Arizona offensive lineman Gavin Broscious and Georgia offensive lineman Kristian Phillips as part of MSU’s 2022 recruiting class, and the first verbal from the Great Lakes State for this recruiting cycle.
