In addition, a little farther from home, in Akron, Ohio, the first annual Papa John's King James Shooting Stars Classic begins. The three-day tournament (Apr. 28-30) which will feature more than 300 AAU basketball teams from across the country, will showcase some of the nation's top high school players. Three major Michigan AAU teams, The Family, Michigan Mustangs, Michigan Hurricanes, will participate, as well as Georgia's Worldwide Renegades. All four of the aforementioned teams have had some solid success this season, and each of them look to be in the championship hunt this weekend.
East-West All-Star Game Highlights Michigan's Best Seniors
This year's East-West Classic is loaded with talent. Andre Charity, an executive with The Family AAU organization and one of the event's organizers, feels that the prep talent in this game rivals any other All-Star game in the country.
"I'd take this group of players and stack them up against any other team in the country," Charity said. "David Kool (Michigan's 2006 Mr. Basketball) is very excited to be able to come over to the east side of the state and play in this game. It also gives fans on the east side who have never seen him play in person, a chance to do so.
One player who was scheduled to play, Detroit Pershing's DeShawn Sims, has already played in two national All Star events this summer (The Jordan Classic in New York City and the Capitol City Classic in Washington D.C.) will not play in the event due to amateur rules.
"Since he has already played in two all-star games, he cannot play in anymore," Charity said.

King James Shooting Stars Classic:
The Family: The 17U squad features two future Michigan State Spartans, Durrell Summers and Kalin Lucas. Other high-profile talent on Detroit's top AAU squad includes G Corperryale Harris (Detroit Redford), F's Devin Searcy (Romulus), Marvin Skipper (Detroit Pershing) and John Tassin (Orchard Lake St. Mary's).
The team has made the Final Four in their last two events, last weekend's Kingwood Classic (Houston, TX) and two weeks ago at the Real Deal on the Hill (Fayetteville, AK). At the Boo Williams tournament (Hampton Roads, VA) earlier this month, they were ousted in the Sweet Sixteen, although they had an excuse for their loss.
"Kalin (Lucas) didn't play because he was taking his SAT test," Charity said.
Harris and Searcy are two of the fastest rising players in Michigan's 2007 class and have already gotten plenty of attention from college coaches this spring.
The Michigan Mustangs: Veteran AAU coach and mentor Norm Oden's squad made it to the championship game in the Showdown in Motown Tournament (Apr. 7-9), before losing to the upstart Tri-City Cobras. The following week, they made it to the Sweet 16 at the Real Deal on the Hill before falling to the Worldwide Renegades, 71-66. The Mustangs have a deep and talented roster with, among others, PF's Josh Southern (Saginaw High) and Paul Crosby (Holt), G's Brad Redford (Frankenmuth), Chase Simon (Detroit Community) and Peter Bunn (Lansing Christian) and W's Austin Thornton (Cedar Springs) and Laval Lucas-Perry (Flint Powers).
Mustangs' 17U coach Rick Carter said that early in the year at the Showdown in Motown, the teams struggled because he "was trying to get them to be unselfish." Their run during the Real Deal a week later showed that they had learned their lesson.
Worldwide Renegades: Are led by the third member of the Spartans' stellar 2007 recruiting class, Chris Allen, as well as one of the nation's most coveted 2007 big men, 6-8, 230 pound power forward, J.J. Hickson.
As mentioned above, the Renegades defeated the Mustangs in the Real Deal before losing in the quarterfinals. Last week at the Kingwood Classic, they lost in the second round of tournament play. Both Allen and Hickson made Rivals.com's list of the Top Five performers from the Real Deal and should make plenty of noise again this weekend in Akron.
Stacy Allen, Chris' father, is the coach of the Renegades. He outlined his team's schedule for the next couple of months.
"(The month of) May is Wallace Prather Memorial (Atlanta), the Cactus Classic (Arizona), and Bob Gibbons (North Carolina)," the elder Allen said. "Those three are back to back weekends beginning second week of May. Then June 15th, Chris will be in San Antonio for the USA camp. Then he will be at the (Reebok) ADCD Camp July 4-10. Our team gets back together later in July for the Team Breakdown Festival in Miami, the (Reebok) Big Time in Las Vegas and Summer Classic in LA."
The Michigan Hurricanes: feature loads of talent in SG Alex Legion, W Darquavis Tucker and PG's Anthony Crater and Kelvin Grady. They won a tournament Easter weekend at Aim High in Lansing. The King James Classic will be their first big test of the AAU season.
The championship game in the U-17 division at King James will be at 2:00 pm, April 30 at the University of Akron's Rhodes Arena. Fox Sports will televise that game nationwide.
