Upper Arlington, Ohio linebacker Chris Frey committed to Michigan State, just after noon on Wednesday.
Frey committed to Michigan State over Kentucky, Boston College, Purdue and Illinois.
Frey camped at Michigan State last summer, gained a scholarship offer from the Spartans last summer, took an unofficial visit to East Lansing on Monday.
Last week, he said he planned to make a decision in July. Then he shortened the timetable to two week, according to a text he sent to SpartanMag.com's Matt Dorsey on Tuesday night. Then Wednesday morning, he was suddenly ready to end it.
Frey a recounted a recent conversation with Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio:
"He proceeded to say he watched my video plenty of times, likes the way I play, that I am an old-school linebacker who brings enthusiasm to the field and loves to hit," Frey told Rivals.com last week. "He said, 'I wanted to offer you a scholarship.' I had to stop for a second and take a deep breath because it was a huge surprise… I was not expecting it at all."
Frey has secured a strong relationship with MSU linebackers coach Mike Tressel.
"I have gotten really close with Coach Tressel," Frey said. "He was my coach last year at camp and he has always been real straightforward with me."
Frey is the third linebacker in the Michigan State, joining Byron Bullough of Traverse City St. Francis and Deon Drake of Detroit Cass Tech.
"The visit was great," Frey said. "I loved it there. The coaching staff is great and the facilities are top notch. The new facility will be nice too."
Frey committed to MSU with the following Tweet today:
Frey also Tweeted his respect and support for current Kentucky commitments with whom he has grown close:
Just wanted to give a S/O to #BBN for all the support! Good luck to my boys @bigmeatdh14 @mikelhorton1 @d_barker7 @darryl_long!- Chris Frey Jr (@Cfrey07) May 15, 2013
