Committed Oak Park QB Mathis listening to MSU

NORTHBROOK, Ill. - When rising junior Oak Park (Mich.) High School QB D’Wan Mathis committed to Iowa State in February, he said he was non-committal on whether he would completely shut down his recruiting process.

The commitment to the Cyclones is still in place, but Mathis said on Sunday that he will likely attend football camps at other colleges this summer. It’s unclear if he will attend camps on his own or as part of high school team trips, but the tall, versatile QB is likely to add to his scholarship offer list if he continues to perform the way he did during Sunday’s Under Armour All-America Camp regional event.

Mathis said he was hoping for an invitation to Under Armour’s Future 50 national event in Orlando in December while at Sunday’s camp. That invitation didn’t come, but Mathis likely strengthened his name on the national radar with a strong, consistent performance.

Mathis showed arm strength, accuracy and was on-time with his decision making in the 7-on-7 portion of the camp.

As for his recruitment, Mathis said Michigan State coaches stopped at his school last week during the opening days of the spring evaluation period. Spartan quarterbacks coach Brad Salem, who recruits suburban Detroit, stopped in at Oak Park High.

“He told me that if I want to be the guy, just come meet with him and Coach Dantonio and talk to them about it,” Mathis said.

Michigan State had not offered when Mathis committed to Iowa State and the Spartans still have not offered. But MSU’s interest has drawn some interest from Mathis.

“So I mean I’m going to go up there and talk to them for a minute,” he said. “I don’t know what might happen. Anything might happen. Anything is possible.”

Mathis has offers from Iowa State, Kentucky, Cincinnati and Mid-American Conference schools.

As for camps this summer, he said: “I’m probably going to go to Iowa State, Michigan State, Florida, Florida State, Alabama, Notre Dame. I’m going to go to a lot of camps.”
