Best of the Dantonio Era: Defense

SpartanMag.com looks at the best players of the Mark Dantonio Era. The Spartans have had many outstanding players during his tenure and a debate can be made at many positions. Check out our list

DETAILS: Calhoun burst onto the scene after ed-shirting and wen on the be a 3x 2nd team All-American. Some of his other accolades included: 3x 1st Team All-Big Ten, 2013 Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year, 2x Bednarik Award Semi-Finalist, 2x Lombardi Award Semi-Finalist, 2015 Hendricks Award finalist. Finished 2nd in school history with 27 sacks.

Runner-up: William Gholston

DETAILS: Worthy was a 3-year letterwinner for MSU that started 38 games during his career. After red-shirting he was named a freshmen All-American. His junior season he was not only named 1st Team All-Big Ten, but was a consensus 1st Team All-American. He would declare early for NFL and ended up being a 2nd round draft pick of the Green bay Packers.

Runner-up: Joel Heath

DETAILS: Jones was the first Spartan to earn back-to-back consensus first-team All-America honors (2009-10) since Bubba Smith and George Webster in 1965-66. He ranks 2nd among MSU's all-time leaders in tackles for loss with 46.5 and is 3rd in total tackles with 465. Nominated for the Butkus, Lombardi and Bednarik awards his junior and senior seasons.

Runner-up: Max Bullough

DETAILS: Two star recruit who went on to win the Jim Thorpe Award as the Nation's top Defensive Back. He was a 2x 1st team All-Big Ten Selection and was named 1st Team All-American his senior season. Ended his Spartan career tied for 11th in school history with 10 interceptions. Dennard was the first NFL Draft first-round selection of the Mark Dantonio era

Runner-up: Trae Waynes

DETAILS: Lewis was a 4-year letterwinner and 3-year starting safety at Michigan State. He totaled 227 tackles and 26 passes defended with eight interceptions. He finished his career with 40 starts. His junior season he was Honorable Mention All-Big Ten and his senior season he was 1st Team All-Big Ten. Had a career-high 13 tackles as MSU defeated No. 2 Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship Game.
