Booth Talks Villanova Verbal
Two days after the final July Live Period came to an end, Villanova University picked up its second commit in the class of 2014 and its third pledge in the last month and a half.
Phil Booth, a 6-foot-3 combo guard from Mount St. Joseph (MD), made the decision to end his recruitment popped to Villanova on Tuesday.
"Best relationship with coaching staff, best fit for me as a player and person to grow, Jay Wright has a great history of producing guards," Booth told VUSports.com.
The four-star prospect had previously been working with a top five that also included Georgetown, Indiana, Temple, and Virginia. He had previously mentioned offers from schools such as Iowa, Maryland, Seton Hall, and Virginia Tech.
Booth said he was not originally expecting to decide right after the Live Periods, but he did not see a reason to delay making his choice.
"I planned to commit in the fall," Booth began, "but when I go locked on Nova for a few weeks, I decided that there is no point to drag out my recruitment if I know where I want to go."
Back in June, Booth told VUSports.com that VU head coach Jay Wright was one of the two college coaches he had the best relationships with.
The No. 78 ranked player in the Rivals 150, Booth shared what it was like when he made the call to the Villanova staff.
"Called coach Jay Wright first," Booth said, "he was very excited on the phone."
Booth also talked about what the Villanova staff has told him his role will be for the Wildcats.
"Scoring point guard and playing the two," Booth said.
As is the case with many high school athletes, Booth is happy to have his recruiting process in the rearview mirror.
"Feels great to have the process over with," Booth said. "Great to move on without worrying where I'm going to school."
This is the second consecutive year that Villanova has landed a player from the Team Takeover program. In 2013, the Wildcats signed Josh Hart of Sidwell Friends (DC).
Booth had previously told VUSports.com that both Hart and fellow 2013 signee Kris Jenkins of Gonzaga (DC) had been recruiting him to join them on the Main Line.
After today, that will indeed be the case as Booth is now in the fold for the Wildcats.
"Philly here I come, Nova Nation," Booth said in conclusion.
Mikal Bridges, a 6-foot-7 small forward from Great Valley (PA), is the other half of Villanova's current 2014 recruiting class. Two scholarships remain available for additional 2014 recruits.
