V-Cast: Comp and PK on win over Northwood
Tom Izzo saw some good things in his team's 85-57 win over Rollie Massimino-coached Northwood (Fla.) University on Tuesday night. But the Michigan State basketball coach saw plenty that needs fixing.EAST LANSING -
Izzo was encouraged that star sophomore Branden Dawson was able to play 22 minutes with no lingering effect from knee injury that ended the McDonald All-American's freshman season last March.
But Izzo was disappointed with the he saw from Dawson, who led the Spartans in scoring against Northwood with 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Dawson's casualness against Northwood was a contributing factor in Michigan State's inability to run the break as well as Izzo hoped his team would in the exhibition opener.
The play of sophomore point guard Travis Trice and freshman guard Gary Harris were bright spots for Michigan State, which plays its final exhibition game on Friday against St. Cloud State.
Trice was 5-of-6 from the floor and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. He also contributed four rebounds and four assists.
Harris was impressive on defensive against Northwood. The 6-foot-4, 205-pound reigning Indiana Mr. Basketball kept Northwood's smaller, explosive guards in front of him all game long. Harris also ran the floor with purpose.
Following Michigan State's exhibition win, SpartanMag staffers Jim Comparoni and Paul Konyndyk ventured out to the Breslin Center floor to share insight and analysis of Michigan State's exhibition win in a 30-minute V-Cast.
