Shumpert commits to Mississippi State

Mississippi State received a big pickup Monday afternoon when Itawamba (Miss.) AHS athlete Ashton Shumpert decided to end his recruitment.

The three-star prospect is considered one of the top running backs in the Magnolia State for the 2013 class.

Shumpert chose the Bulldogs over other offers from Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt.

"I really like how Coach (Dan) Mullen and Coach (Greg) Knox talk about hard work all the time," Shumpert said. "When I went there this summer for camp it went real well. I liked working with Coach Knox out there. It felt like we had already done all that before and it was a routine thing."

The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder was being recruited at several different positions by other schools. But MSU likes Shumpert's ability in the backfield and is the Bulldogs only running back commitment so far in 2013 after fellow instate tailback Kailo Moore withdrew his commitment.

State did not sign a running back in 2012. Their ground game 1,874 yards rushing this past season which is one of the reasons Shumpert decided to take his services there.
