Valentine leads Mustangs to Motown title

DETROIT - Denzel Valentine, Chris Harrison-Docks, Marquise Mondy, Khaliq Spicer and their Michigan Mustangs teammates won a bunch of games last summer when they were one of the best 16-and-under outfits in the country.

Last weekend the Mustangs picked up where they left off last summer winning 17-and-under Gold Division championship at their own Motown Showdown.

The Mustangs began bracket play with a 15-point victory over the Derrick Rose All-Stars. The state's top Adidas Team then scrapped out a 75-74 victory in a semifinal match-up with Sheron Dorsey-Walker's R.E.A.C.H Legends. The Mustangs closed out the tournament by thumping Team Detroit 75-49 in the championship game.

Valentine, A 6-foot-5, 205-pound Michigan State commitment for 2011, was the best player on the floor in most of the games his team played whether or not he led the Mustangs in scoring. Valentine finished with just 12 points in the championship game, but the future Spartan put his stamp on the contest with a slew of pretty passes that set teammates up for transition buckets or wide-open 3-pointers.
