February 6, 2013Vanderbilt closed out National Signing Day on Wedneday with another huge commitment, securing the services of four-star outside linebacker Zach Cunningham. He announced his decision publicly in a ceremony at Pinson Valley High in Alabama.
The 6-foot-4, 205-pound standout made a rapid rise up the recruiting rankings with a sensational senior year that included 194 total tackles, 43 tackles for loss, 12 sacks and four blocked field goals. His performance garnered him All-American honors from MaxPreps as well as consensus Class 5A All-State honors. He was also named the Metro Birmingham Lineman of the Year by the Birmingham News. He was also a Semper Fidelis All-American.
Cunningham registered 448 total tackles over the last three years including 72 tackles for loss.
A long, active hybrid linebacker/defensive end prospect that plays with great instincts and quickness. Rivals.com ranks him 23rd among the nation's outside linebackers and 13th among prospects from the state of Alabama.
He chose Vanderbilt over offers from Auburn, Colorado Miami, Ole Miss, Oregon, UCLA, Texas and Tennessee. Many others, including Alabama and Southern Cal, were also involved.
Cunningham's addition moves Vanderbilt's 2013 signing class to 19th overall nationally, the highest ranking in Commodore football history.
Check back for more on Cunningham's decision later this week.
