Domicone has a busy day
Life is about timing and that is even more evident when it comes to the world of recruiting. Beavercreek (Ohio) athlete Zach Domicone has seen his stock shoot through the roof over the past couple of weeks and had picked up interest from schools like Nebraska and UConn recently. Everything changed on Friday for the 6-foot-3, 215-pounder and his entire recruitment has been turned upside down based on one phone call from Ohio State.
They called my coach yesterday and told him that coach Tressel would be watching my tape this morning," Domicone said. "My coach was in constant contact with Ohio State all day today through phone calls. I went down there at the end of the day and he was on the phone with Ohio State and stepped outside of the room and came back inside the room and said that Coach Tressel wanted to talk to me."
Domicone had always liked the Buckeyes but wasn't quite sure what was coming up next.
"Coach Tressel said that they had a scholarship for me at Ohio State," Domicone said.
The irony of the timing was that the Beavercreek athlete had just set up a visit to see the Sooners for this weekend only hours earlier.
"I had talked with coach Stoops and their defensive coordinator and they wanted me to fly out (Saturday) so we worked all that out," Domicone said. "This was before we knew anything about Ohio State going to offer or that they were that interested. We called Oklahoma and told them that I wouldn't be going in and that I would be going to Ohio State instead."
Now instead of heading west the rising star will be heading north to Columbus to check things out. Have the Buckeyes talked to him about a position yet?
"They are talking about strong safety now but everyone thinks I am going to move into a linebacker," Domicone said. "They think I have a good potential to grow more."
Domicone currently is ranked as a two-star prospect but after sending in tape the Ohio product is expected to be in the high three-star range. What does Domicone feel is his greatest strength to his game?
"I think I have a good combination of size and speed, I have been timed at a 4.47 40 twice (Ohio State and Akron) and I have some size to go with that," Domicone said. "I think I can play back in coverage as a safety or come up and stop the run at both positions."
With a handful of offers already put together what does the Ohio State offer mean to him and is it any more special being an in-state player?
"It's the one I have been waiting for," "Actually to tell you the truth if someone would have told me yesterday I wouldn't have believed it."
Why is it so hard to believe for Domicone?
"I haven't received a single letter from them or a single phone call or haven't stopped in to talk to me," Domicone said. "It has all been a whirlwind today at school so I am definitely very excited about it."
He admits that it will be hard not to commit on the spot when he gets to Columbus and that it is a dream come true.
"If I go up there and I like what I see then I think I am going to jump on it," Domicone said. "Ohio State is just the school that I have always wanted to go to and the top school in the country that I would pick to attend."
Domicone has a 3.7 GPA and a 1710 on the SAT. BuckeyeGrove.com will have an update from Zach after he returns from his visit to Columbus and the news if he is the newest member of the class of 2008.
