Orsbon improves stock at Spartan camp
Back in June, Briggs Orsbon of Crestview High School in Ohio came up to Michigan State for the Senior Day Elite Camp. Despite nursing a sore ankle he performed very well and was asked by the Spartan staff to comeback to camp for a day in July
Orsbon burst on the recruiting scene earlier this spring after an impressive performance at the Elite Combine held in Cleveland, Ohio. Michigan State Head Coach Mark Dantonio attended the combine and was able observe Orsbon in action.
As a junior, Orsbon rushed for over 1300-yards and accounted for over 2000 all-purpose yards for Crestview High School. He played wide receiver, quarterback and running back in addition to his duties on defense and special teams. He has been playing on the varsity since his freshmen year. We spoke with the 6-foot-0, 183-pound Orsbon about his recruitment and what he is hearing from the Spartan staff.
"Coach (Don) Treadwell wanted me to comeback up in July. I sprained my ankle three days before the first camp and wanted to improve my performance. When we spoke a few days before camp he suggested that I workout with Coach Barnett as a defensive backs.
What did you think about that?
"Well a lot of schools are recruiting me as an athlete, so I did not mind. All of the other camps I have been working out as a wide receiver so it was different. They told me that the fact that I can play both positions well improved my standing with them."
The Rivals.com database has Orsbon listed as a 3-star prospect and the #85 wide receiver in the nation for the class of 2008. He is ranked the #34 player in talented loaded Ohio as well. We asked him if he is set on playing wide receiver at the next level?
"It does not matter to me, the fastest way to get on the field that is what is important. I play safety or lockdown corner when we play a team with a good wide receiver so it doesn't matter to me."
In addition to the Spartan Camp, Orsbon also camped at Ohio State, Michigan and Purdue. He indicated that the Spartans and Wolverines are the two teams that are showing him the most interest at this point.
"I had my best camp at University of Michigan. I did real well in the 1-on-1's and they have been in contact with me since then.
Orsbon already has six scholarships on the table, but has yet to pick up an offer from any of the Big Ten school s he is looking closely at. Schools such as Michigan State and Michigan want to see some tape from his first few games this fall. We asked him if he could possibly commit to one of the schools that has already offered him a scholarship before the Big Ten schools decide if they are going to offer?
"I am not in a rush. I am going to wait and see what happens with the Big Ten schools," he said."
