Prep Round-Up: Sokol, Smith and Copeland star
SpartanMag.com has the details on how the committed players to Michigan State University performed this past weekend. Several of them had big games, including tight end prospect Matt Sokol of Rochester Adams High School in Michigan. Find out the latest.
Class of 2014:
QB Chris Durkin of Youngstown Ursuline High School in Ohio
Durkin's Youngstown Ursuline lost Pennsylvania powerhouse Erie Cathedral Prep by a score of 37-8. The gane started well with Durking scoring on a 2-yard touchdown to put Ursuline up 8-0, but it was all downhill from there. Durkin ended up leaving the game late in the 3rd quarter with an ankle injury. The injury should not cause him to miss any games. Durkin talked about his team falling to 2-3 on the season.
"We play a tough schedule," Durkin said. "No one else in Division V has a schedule like ours. Whether we win or lose we always look to correct are mistakes before the next week's game." www.vindy.com
RB Gerald Owens of West Deptford High School in New Jersey
West Deptford rolled to a 63-8 victory over Overbrook High School. Owens, who suffered a sprained ankle last week, sat out this contest. West Deptford is now 3-o on the season.
TE Matt Sokol of Rochester Adams High School in Michigan
Sokol had a big game while helping lead Adams High School to an important win over Oxford High School 28-21. The future Spartan tight end rushed for 131-yards and scored a touchdown on 20 carries. The win improves Adams to 3-2 on the season and keeps Adams on pace to get back to the playoffs.
OL Brian Allen of Hinsdale Central High School in Illinois
Hinsdale Central High School lost to Glenbard West High School by a score of 37-7. The loss dropped Hinsdale Central to 3-2 on the season. Allen limped off the field late in the game with a leg injury. SpartanMag.com will find out more, but at this point it does not seem like a serious injury.
OL Chase Gianacakos of St Charles North High School in Illinois
St. Charles North High School spotted Geneva High School 21-points in the 1st quarter and it was too much to overcome as they fell short in their comeback 35-28. North High School fell to 2-3 with the loss.
OL Nick Padla of Berrien Springs High School in Michigan
Berrien Spring was able to get back on the winning track with a 26-0 win over South Haven High School. The win snapped a 3-game skid for the Shamrocks and improved their record to 2-3.
DL Enoch Smith Jr. of Mt Carmel High School in Chicago, Illinois
Smith and top ranked Mt. Carmel improved to 5-0 on the season with a 24-3 win over previously unbeaten St. Rita High School. St. Rita High School quarterback and Iowa state commitment Tommy Mister was bottled up all night long by the Mt. Carmel defense.
"Defensive tackles Enoch Smith (Michigan State) and Steve Richardson (Minnesota) were typically dominant up front for the Caravan." -www.chicagotribue.com
DE Robert Bowers of Walnut Ridge High School in Columbus, Ohio
Bowers is sitting out the season due to having shoulder surgery. His Walnut Ridge dropped a game to Marion-Franklin by a score of 22-7. The loss dropped them to 3-2 on the season.
DT David Beedle of Clarkston High School in Michigan
Clarkston defeated Rochester Stoney Creek High School by a score of 42-7. The Wolves have won 4 in a row and look to be playing like the team everyone expected to compete for the state title. Beedle has helped anchor both the offensive and defensive lines.
LB Deon Drake of Detroit Cass Tech High School in Michigan
Drake is recovering from an injury. Cass Tech defeated Detroit Central High School by a score of 76-0 to improve to 5-0 on the season. The Technicians are ranked #1 in Michigan.
LB Byron Bullough of Traverse City St. Francis High School in Michigan
Bullough and the Gladiators lost to Boyne City High School by a score of 27-14. Boyne City improved to 4-1 while St. Francis fell to 3-2. Bullough was able to rush for 107-yards in the loss.
LB Chris Frey of Upper Arlington High School in Ohio
Upper Arlington lost 16-8 to Olentangy Liberty High School by a score of 16-8. The loss dropped Upper Arlington to 2-3 on the season. Frey was his typical self on defense, racking up double-digit tackles. He scored to lone touchdown for Upper Arlington, but was limited to 66-yards on 12 carries.
DB Vayante Copeland of Thurgood Marshall High School in Dayton, Ohio
Copeland and his team lost to Cincinnati Winton Woods by a score of 41-34. Copeland scored 3 touchdowns in the loss and rushed for 159-yards on 14 carries. Winton Woods is one of the top ranked teams in Division 2, while Thurgood Marshall is one of the top teams in Division 3. Spartan Coach Harlon Barnet was at the game watching Copeland and Winton Woods DT Daniel Cage. Rivals.com Midwest Analyst Josh Helmholdt was also on hand at the game and had the following to say about the future Spartan.
"The 5-foot-11, 186-pound Copeland started Thursday night's showdown with Winton Woods by returning the opening kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown. He finished in almost as spectacular fashion, but it was ruled he landed on the back line of the end zone while catching a Hail Mary pass as time ran out. In between, Copeland had touchdown runs of 80 and 49 yards and took a punt back 45 yards to set up a game-tying score. Michigan State is bringing Copeland in as a defensive back, but he was far more impactful on offense and special teams because Winton Woods did not throw often." -Josh Helmholdt
DB Jalen Watts-Jackson of Orchard Lake Saint Mary's High School in Michigan
Saint Mary's lost a defensive struggle to Warren De La Salle by a score of 7-0. The loss dropped Saint Mary's to 2-2 on the season with the always tough game against Brother Rice on tap next. The game should be a great test for Watts-Jackson and Tyson Smith as Brother Rice is led by quarterback Alex Malzone, who has won the last 2 weeks with late TD's passes.
ATH Matt Morrissey of Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois
Stevenson High School scored early and often to roll to a 52-7 win over Vernon Hills High School. The win improved Stevenson to 3-2 on the season. Future Spartan Matt Morrissey continued to play well with several nice plays including a touchdown grab on a well thrown fade.
