Another QB surfaces for Ole Miss
Ole Miss has offered just two quarterbacks and is eyeing several more potential candidates who could soon receive an offer and another Texas quarterback is ready to join the fray.
Drew Hollingshead from Rockwall (Heath High School) said Saturday that he's yet to hear from Ole Miss, but if the Rebels show some interest, he's definitely interested in Ole Miss.
"When I started looking at schools, I knew they got their new coach - and I like Coach (Houston) Nutt's style of offense - it was one of the schools that came to mind. I'd definitely be interested in Ole Miss if they started showing interest."
Liking Nutt's sometimes run oriented offense may seem unusual for a 6-foot-3, 190 pound pro-style quarterbacked (ranked the 22nd best at his position in the country), but there's a reason for that.
"We're actually going to an offense this year where I'll be asked to run the ball a lot more," he said. "Last year, if you watch the video, I was in the shotgun and handed off to one of two backs. That will change this year and I've really been working on my speed."
Hollingshead was timed at a NIKE camp at 4.81 40-yard dash, but turned in a 4.76 last week at Texas Tech's mini-camp.
The prospect said he's hearing from Louisville, Kansasa State, Colorado State, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and UTEP. He received his first offer this week, which was from Idaho State. He said he gets mail from schools around the country, but the preceding teams are the ones showing the most interest.
Hollingshead didn't make many round at various junior days across the country this spring due to playing baseball, but did manage stops by Texas Tech and SMU.
Hollingshead's father is Tam Hollingshead, who played at SMU before becoming the head coach at Odessa Permian in the early 90's and later serving as an assistant coach at Texas A&M for nine years. He is currently the director of high school relations for June Jones at SMU.
That; however, doesn't give SMU the edge in his recruitment.
"People think that I'm an SMU lean because of my dad, but that's just an assumption, not the truth," Hollingshead recently told RedRaiderSports.com. "It couldn't be further from it. SMU has a ton of QB's anyways, and it's not like it is the right place for me automatically just because of my dad. He's staying out of it and letting me just try to find the place that's best for me."
Hollingshead confirmed that stance on Saturday.
Prior reports have Hollingshead having an offer from UTEP, but he said on Saturday that's not the case.
"That got mixed up a little bit," Hollingshead said. "They said they wanted to get me at camp and they might offer."
Hollingshead spent Saturday at UTEP and still doesn't have an offer.
"I think there's something that they can't offer until 24-hours after I leave," he said. "I had a got workout and I might get an offer in a few days."
Hollingshead said he's never been to Mississippi, but would jump at the chance to take an unofficial visit if invited - and he would love the chance to show his skills at Ole Miss' Elite Camp (invited players only) in late July.
Hollingshead hit on 101 of 161 passes last year for a clip of 63 percent for 1,319 yards. He had just three interceptions.
Ole Miss has currently offered just two quarterbacks - Nathan Scheelhaase and AJ McCarron, an Alabama commitment.
Others on Ole Miss' board include Louisville, Miss. three-star Clayton Moore and Texas three-star Drew Allen. Allen is due to take his second unofficial visit to Ole Miss next Saturday.
