Spartans target Ohio DT for class of 2008
One of the top performers this summer at the Michigan State camp was defensive tackle prospect Jerel Worthy of Huber Heights Wayne High School. The 6-foot-2, 288-pound prospect was offered a scholarship by Coach Mark Dantonio shortly thereafter. SpartanMag.com spoke with Worthy last night and got the latest news on his season and his recruitment.
Huber Heights Wayne High School always has a lot of talent and this year is no exception. Worthy has helped lead Wayne top a 2-1 start with the only loss coming in a hard-fought contest to 2nd ranked Colerain High School in the Cincinnati Enquirer Poll.
Worthy is seeing plenty o f attention from opposing offense lines. "I have been getting double-teams a lot and team are trying to cut block me, but I still have 4.5 sacks on the year. I only had 4 sacks last season, so I think I am playing pretty well."
The last two games Wayne High School Warriors have only allowed 6 points and opponents have not been able to get anything going on the ground. This coming week Xenia High School will look to test the Wayne defense with an impressive rushing attack. The contest should be one of the top games in Ohio this week
As far a recruiting, Worthy has been receiving plenty of attention ever since the contact period stared back up on September 1st
"Michigan State, North Carolina State, Wisconsin, Cincinnati, Akron Western Michigan And West Virginia all of those schools have been in contact plus a few more he said.
The Spartans are one of the teams that has been showing a consistent high level of interest. Worthy is being recruited mainly by Coach Barnett, but his position Coach Ted Gill is also actively involved in the process.
"Coach Barnett keep sin close touch with my family. He is a very spiritual person and I come for a spiritual family so I appreciate that. Coach Gill and I talk al to about football and becoming a better player."
Worthy was able to attend the Cincinnati Bearcats victory over Oregon State the other day and he was hoping to get t West Virginia last weekend until his game got moved from Friday night to Saturday due to weather. He talked about getting up to East Lansing in the near future.
"I am planning to get up there for a few games. I want to go see a night game up there and I would also like to see them when the play Ohio State."
Speaking of Ohio State are the Buckeyes in contact?
I have not heard a lot form them. Being from Ohio it would be great to hear from them, but if I have to go elsewhere to play that is fine with me.
The Spartans have been very fortunate getting some players that the Buckeyes have "overlooked" once such player is a good friend of Worthy's
"I am good friends with Javon Ringer. He and I speak a lot. I know he is doing great up there at Michigan State and I am real happy for him. We went to school together at Cahminade-Julienne. I think the offense they have up there is great for him."
Worthy did not indicate when a decision could be made. Teams like Wisconsin, NC State and West Virginia are apparently close to offering and Worthy could set up his official visit in the neat future.
Look for Michigan State to lock in an official visit with Worthy and don't be surprised if Javon Ringer looks to get his old teammate to join him in East Lansing and continue to build toward championships under Coach Dantonio
