Q&A with B.J. Machen
Georgia Tech has been hot on the recruiting trail lately with four public commitments just in the month of July alone. One of those new additions is B.J. Machen, a linebacker from Darby High School in Hilliard, Ohio. JacketsOnline.com caught up with Machen to get his feelings about being one of the newest Yellow Jackets.
I know you first visited Georgia Tech in late June, spent a few days in Atlanta seeing the school and meeting with family, then you committed about a week later. What went into the decision to commit to Georgia Tech?
"I talked it over with my family. Mostly it came down to what I was feeling and where I felt comfortable the most. It actually came down to a couple schools, but Georgia Tech came out on top. It had a few extra qualities that set them apart. It's a great academic institution. There's winning football. It's in a great city. I have family down there and I have a cousin that plays, DeRon Jasper. He plays right now so I would be playing with him. That all added together, just along with my gut feeling. Georgia Tech came out on top. I figured that's where I wanted to be and I want to help lead them to a national championship."
How did you go about making the verbal commitment? Did you give one of the coaches a phone call?
"I've been thinking G-Tech for a while. I was going to do it (on the Fourth of July), but it was a holiday and I figured the coaches were with their families, so I would hold off. I called Coach B.J. (Brian Jean-Mary), the linebackers coach. I called him (July 5) around noon and let him know, then I called Coach (Chan) Gailey and let him know. They were both really excited about it and really excited to get me down there and get this thing rolling."
