Prep Round-Up: Morrissey makes plays
SpartanMag.com has the details on how the committed players to Michigan State University performed this past weekend. Several of them had big games, including wide receiver prospect Matt Morrissey of Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois. Find out the latest.
Class of 2014:
QB Chris Durkin of Youngstown Ursuline High School in Ohio
Durkin's Youngstown Ursuline team got back on track and defeated Steubenville High School by a score of 46-21. Durkin rushed for 2 touchdowns and threw for 1 more in the win. Ursuline is now 4-3 on the season.
RB Gerald Owens of West Deptford High School in New Jersey
West Deptford High School defeated Sterling high school by a score of 35-7. The game was a mathc-up of undefeated teams. The win moved West Deptford to 5-0 on the season. Owens rushed for 85-yards and scored 2 touchdowns. Owens talked about being ready for this big game:
"Hard work on and off the field [is why I am successful]. The off-season program and a lot more practice here. That is where we get a lot of our strength and speed. We also spend a lot of time in the weight room in the offseason. We practice hard everyday." -www.nj.com
TE Matt Sokol of Rochester Adams High School in Michigan
Sokol is out for season with injury. His team is 5-3 overall after defeating Bloomfiled Hill 38-28
OL Brian Allen of Hinsdale Central High School in Illinois
Hinsdale Central lost to Oak Park-River Forest by a score of 28-10. The loss dropped the Big Red to 4-4 on the season. Hinsdale Central has been decimated with injuries at the quarterback position this fall.
OL Chase Gianacakos of St Charles North High School in Illinois
St. Charles North High School improved to 4-4 on the season with a 48-20 victory over Larkin High School The win improved North to 4-4 on the season .
OL Nick Padla of Berrien Springs High School in Michigan
Berrien Spring High School defeated Coloma High School by a score of 24-14. The win improved Berrien Springs to 3-5 on the season. Padla helped open holes for a rushing attack that rolled up 257-yards on the night.
DL Enoch Smith Jr. of Mt Carmel High School in Chicago, Illinois
Smith and top ranked Mt. Carmel High- School improved to 9-0 on the season with a 41-0 win over Boonville High School. Smith helped lead the dominant Aces defense.
DE Robert Bowers of Walnut Ridge High School in Columbus, Ohio
Bowers is sitting out the season due to having shoulder surgery. His Walnut Ridge team defeated Briggs High School by a score of 63-12. The win moved them to 6-2 on the season.
DT David Beedle of Clarkston High School in Michigan
Clarkston defeated Lake Orion School by a score of 49-28. The win clinched the OAA Red Title for Clarkston. The Wolves have won 7 in a row -and look to be playing like the team everyone expected to compete for the state title. The 6-foot-5, 290-pound Beedle has helped anchor both the offensive and defensive lines for Clarkston. Clarkston will play Southfield High School next weekend in a game which will feature close to a dozen D1 recruits going head to head.
LB Deon Drake of Detroit Cass Tech High School in Michigan
Drake is back from his injury and making plays for the Technicians. Cass Tech defeated Detroit East English High School by a score of 19-0 to improve to 8-0 on the season. Drake scored a touchdown on a 34-yard run to put the game away for Cass Tech. Next week the Technicians will face Detroit Martin Luther King for the PSL title. King defeated Cass Tech in last year's game, however Cass Tech went on to win the state title.
LB Byron Bullough of Traverse City St. Francis High School in Michigan
The Gladiators got back on track by defeating previously undefeated Glen Lake High School by a score of 28-21. The win was key for St. Francis who improved to 5-3 on the season and need 1 more win to secure a playoff spot.
LB Chris Frey of Upper Arlington High School in Ohio
Upper Arlington High School upset Marysville High School by a score of 26-14. The win improved the Golden Bears to 4-4 on the season. Frey played a big role in the upset. He led his team in rushing with 75-yards, scored a touchdown, led his team in tackles and had an interception.
DB Vayante Copeland of Thurgood Marshall High School in Dayton, Ohio
Copeland had an easy night as Thurgood Marshall rolled to a 56-0 win over Belmont High School. Copeland scored 2 quick touchdowns and then spent most game from the sidelines. Marshall is now 4-3 on the season and Copeland is averaging close to 200-yards per contest in addition to playing lights-out on defense.
DB Jalen Watts-Jackson of Orchard Lake Saint Mary's High School in Michigan
Saint Mary's defeated Davison High School by a score of 49-14 to improve to 4-4 on the season. Due to playing an extremely difficult schedule, the Eaglets should be able to qualify for the playoffs at 5-4 if they win next week.
ATH Matt Morrissey of Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois
Stevenson High School won its sixth consecutive game by defeating Lake Forest High School by a score of 20-6. The win improved the Patriots to 6-2 on the season. Lake Forest fell to 6-2. Morrissey was instrumental in the win scoring 2 touchdowns and catching 8 passes for 81-yards. The win sets up a showdown for the Conference Championship between Stevenson and undefeated Lake Zurich (8-0).
P Jake Hartbarger of Anthony Wayne High School in Whitehouse, Ohio
Anthony Wayne High School defeated Napoloen High School by a score of 28-14 to improve to 4-4 on the season. In addition to his punting, Hartbarger hit 4 of 4 extra points.
