Future Spartans: Playoff Preview
Several future Spartans as well as prospects are in action this weekend. The state of Michigan will determine the state champion in 8 different divisions down at Ford Filed. SpartanMag.com looks at the players of note from Michigan State's perspective.
Division 1: Detroit Cass Tech vs. Detroit Catholic Central (1PM Saturday)
This game is a re-match of last years' championship in which Cass Tech became the 1st PSL school to win the Division 1 Championship. The game is loaded with top prospects.
Cass Tech has future Spartans David Finley and Deon Drake as well as Michigan commitment Jourdan Lewis and Iowa commitment Delano Hill. 2013 offensive lineman David Dawson has been offered by the Spartans as has 2014 blue-chip recruit Damon Webb. 2013 DT recruit Kenton Gibbs also has a host of D1 offers. Throw in 2015 quarterback prospect Jayru Campbell, who shined in last years' game, and you can see why the Technicians are right back at Ford Field.
Catholic Central may not have as many division 1 prospects, but they still have plenty of talent. One of the players is Michigan commitment Wyatt Shallman. Offensive lineman Derek Edwards is committed to Central Michigan. Michigan State is very interest in 2014 prospect Dylan Roney who already has a Toledo offer.
These two teams have been on a mission to get back to Ford Field since August.
Division 2: Muskegon vs. Birmingham Brother Rice Friday (1PM Friday)
This game features the two most storied high school football programs in Michigan history. You have the winningest program (Muskegon) vs. the winningest coach (Al Fracasa).
Brother Rice is led by future Spartan linebacker Jon Reschke who has had a monster senior season. The Warriors also feature 2014 running back prospect Brian Walker. He has pounded teams this year for over 1400-yards. Brother Rice has a pair of defensive ends that are outstanding athletes in their own rights.
The Big Red are led by 2014 DT prospect Kenny Finley who checks in at 6-foot-3, 265-pounds. Finley is getting a lot of early interest from Michigan and Michigan State. Quarterback Jalen Smith is a very crafty and he will get plenty of attention from the Warrior defense.
Division 3 Grand Rapids Christian vs. Orchard Lake Saint Mary's (7:30 PM Saturday)
Grand Rapids Christian is led by future Spartan wide receiver Drake Harris. The 6-foot-4, 185-pound prospect is closing in on being the most prolific wide receiver in Michigan history. Harris has not done it all by himself as quarterback Alex Van De Vusse was 1st team All-State as was kicker Joel Schipper. Tight end Zach Crouch is very talented and he is headed to Central Michigan.
OLSM is not in the championship game for no reason. Coach George Porrit's team may no have the star power it has had in the past, but it has a bunch of outstanding football players. The team is led by All-State linebacker Grant Niemiec. Lineman Austin Johnson has been a force all season long.
Division 4 Grand Rapids South Christian vs. Detroit Country Day (730 Friday)
Country day is led by 2014 quarterback prospect Tyler Wiegers who already holds multiple MAC offers. 2013 defensive lineman Poet Thomas has an impressive list of offers. Most teams see him switching to the offensive line at the next level.
Division 6: Ithaca vs. Constantine (430PM on Friday)
Ithaca is looking to repeat and they are led by quarterback Travis Smith. Smith, who can beat teams with is arm and his legs will end up shattering the school records set by current Central Michigan quarterback Alex Niznak.
Pennsylvania State Championship:
Erie Cathedral Prep vs Genreal McLane (Friday 730)
Undefeated Cathedral Prep will continue driving toward a state championship when they meet General McLane High School.
The two team met a few weeks ago and future Spartans Damion Terry and Delton Williams helped Cathedral Prep roll to a 47-0 win. Expect this game to be quite a bit closer this time around.
