Willies learns at camp
Hawkeye commit Derrick Willies was among the players at Iowa's one-day camp on Sunday. While many campers were working to earn a scholarship offer, Willies already has one obviously so his goal was to learn as much as possible from wide receivers coach Erik Campbell. Mission accomplished he says as he talks with us about the whole camp experience, winning a state title in track last month, and much more.
Q: How did it go out at Iowa's camp today?
WILLIES: It was real nice. I got to work with Coach Campbell a lot.
Q: What did you kind of take away from that whole experience?
WILLIES: He's a real good coach. I definitely like the way that he coaches. He showed me a couple things that I didn't really know and I'll definitely be working on those a lot over the summer. But overall, I think him being my coach for the next four or five years, we're going to do some good things.
As a junior, the 6-foot-3, 190-pound Willies caught 57 passes for 934 yards and seven touchdowns at Burlington High School in Iowa before transferring to Rock Island, Illinois this past winter. In April, Willies committed to the Hawkeyes over scholarship offers from Iowa State and Northern Illinois, among others.
