Donavon Clark: I am a Spartan
SpartanMag.com as able to track down the newest member of the Michigan State Class of 2011 recruiting class, Donavon Clark of Finneytown High School in Ohio. The 6-foot-5, 310-pound prospect is rated a 3-star recruit and the #50 offensive tackle in the nation. He is also ranked the #25 player overall in talent-loaded Ohio.
Clark's first statement to us was simple and emphatic, "Yes, sir, I am a Spartan!"
SpartanMag.com asked Clark what it was about Michigan State University that made it the place for him and when did he come to a decision.
"It was a few weeks ago," he stated. I was actually down stairs washing my cloths and it just hit me that Michigan State was where I wanted to go. It just felt right to me when I was there. I liked everything about it, the campus, the facilities and the coaches. I would have to say that how I got along with the coaches really helped me make my decision."
Clark was at one point thinking of waiting things out until later this fall, but he also understood that if he knew where he wanted to go, there was no need to risk and delay. We asked Clark about the other schools that he seriously considered and what his strengths are as a player.
"I also considered Cincinnati, Indiana and Tennessee," Clark stated. "I think my run blocking is my biggest strength and my quickness of the ball as an offensive lineman."
Clark's quickness off the ball actually prompted some schools to look at Clark as a potential defensive tackle, but he feels his best shot for having success at the Big Ten level and possibly beyond is on the offensive line.
SpartanMag.com asked Clark about talking with the Michigan State staff about his commitment.
"I was able to speak with Coach Dantonio, Coach Barnett, Coach Roushar and Coach State, he stated. They were all fired up when I called up there.
Clark's commitment is the 2nd offensive line commitment to Michigan state is as many week. The combination of Clark and Allen gives Michigan State two high-level prospect in the trenches. The Spartans will likely only sign 3 OL for the class, now they will be very selective and focus on only a few elite prospects. Having Allen and Clark prior to the season is a big positive for Michigan State.
Last fall Calrk was 2009 Honorable Mention All-State in Ohio as well as 1st team All-CHL and All-Southwest Division. Ths past spring he took home the Division II Discus Championship.
